This painting is by far my favourite painting out of the three. I learned through mistakes on my other painting on what not to do and I think this showed. For example, I learned through doing research on oil painting and talking to tutors on different painting techniques. The previous paintings I had done didn’t go quite well as I had hoped, something was missing from the pieces and they didn’t have the effect i wanted them to have. What I realised was that the other paintings didn’t have depth to them. The colours were too solid and it didn’t produce this floating image I wanted to create. In order for this to not happen again I learned about different painting techniques such as how to make the paint thinner by using newspaper to take off layers.
This piece is very controlling. It tells you where to look through a sense of directionality along the outer edge (the darkness). The colours draw you in and force you to study it. The blurred edges around the center of the painting causes you to look at it more to figure it out. It is not a straight edge where you can quickly glance and know what’s there.
I used a lot of different techniques to this piece than the others. For example:
- Using more than one shade of colour throughout the whole piece to create depth.
- Using directionality to guide the viewer.
- Having base colours such as blue under orange to create vibrancy.
- Leaving parts of the canvas with little to no paint to achieve a glowing effect.
- Using masking tape to create sharp edges
