We had the opportunity to practise installing our art and using space to enhance our pieces. for me this was a good opportunity to get feedback from people and what they took away from my work. My project focuses on the viewers reaction and their connection to the art, so this was a good chance to understand their emotional response. I chose to use the darkest room in the space given and use it to my advantage. What I liked about the lighting was that there was a shaft of light which slightly lit up the room. This made the small amount of colour in my work luminous which made some drawings quite mesmerising as the orange really popped and almost glowed. This attention to the light in the drawing within the dark space made it more intriguing and I liked the underlying message of the viewers paying more attention to the positive rather than the vast amount of dark space – being the negative.
Most of the feedback was focused on the scale of one of the pieces. A lot of the viewers felt as though they were engulfed by the piece, which was something that I wanted to achieve. I want them to feel as though they have nowhere else to look so that they focus on the work and their response to it.
Miyabe also shared the dark room with me, our work showed well together as our pieces were quite minimalistic and created a tranquil ambiance in the room. She had placed pieces of charcoal that she had found on the floor and abstract drawings on the wall above it. The opening of the charcoal layout invited the viewers to step into the piece which I thought was quite interesting because of the fragility of charcoal, this also linked which my tissue paper piece and how easily damaged it can be. I really liked how she placed the pieces of charcoal in an ordered, balanced way.
Opposite the dark room was one filled with light that Tash and Mary had occupied. I also think that their art worked well together in the same room. I noticed that they both had similar colours in their work.
What I particularly liked about Tasha;s work was the neutral colour palette, it gave a sense of calmness which contrasted some of the more aggressive textures in her work. Mary’s display also featured neutral tones mainly with the paper she used for her drawings. Her work was about femininity and the female figure. One piece of work that stood out to me was her painting of Venus, I thought that she used the colours within the painting really well as each shade complemented each other which is what made it really stand out to me.
