For my project I wanted to somehow communicate other people experiences that they went through. At first I didn’t know how I was going to do this, whether I was going to incorporate it into the paintings in some way, visually or audibly. The first thing I did was put a story out on my Instagram to see what people’s responses would be and if they would respond to it. I didn’t exactly know what I would then do with the information, but I tried using words in a painting and I really didn’t like the outcome as I thought that It wasn’t expressive enough and it was too obvious just painting words on. I want people to look at my work, figure out what it means and reflect on it. the painting that I didn’t really didn’t achieve that. however I did like the background of it and the sudden stokes of paint smeared on however the writing let the whole piece down.
I also contemplated writing words subtly underneath a thin layer of paint. Kazimir Malevich and many other artists often write messages underneath layers of paint. However I decided not to as I thought even seeing words in a painting made the focus on other people’s stories rather than the viewers own personal life stories. I want people to look at a piece and think of their own experiences not others. The sound recording should instigate this reflection on the viewers own life rather than focus on others.

I started to think of other ways that I could communicate peoples experiences and sound came to mind. What I liked about this idea was that when you heard the person telling their story it made it more personal and real.

I recorded several people for the recording mainly because I wanted it to be quite lengthy for the exhibition so there could be noise most of the time so people don’t just walk in when it’s quiet. The reason for the composition of the recording is that I wanted people to focus on the positive which I why when you first hear it you listen to people’s voices overlapped creating a jumble of noise so you can’t really concentrate on what they’re saying.
